Leon George Manescu, Senior, 86 of Union passed away from lung cancer early Tuesday morning, June 3, 2014 into the arms of his Savior at his home surrounded by family. The youngest of three children, Leon was born March 8, 1928 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, son of Sammil Manescu and Maria nee Heit. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Sammil and Maria Manescu and his brothers, Jon and Stevie Manescu. Leon is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Manescu (Roth) of Union; his daughter, Sharon M. Fisher (Manescu) and husband Todd of Union; his son, Leon G. Manescu, Jr. and wife Patty (Eby) of Slatington, PA.; five grandchildren, Melanie Hamm (Fisher) and husband Joe, Ryan Fisher, Chloe Manescu, Tiffany Manescu and Aurora Manescu; two great-grandchildren, Melissa Hamm and Joey Hamm; other relatives and many friends. At the age of two he moved with his family to Sasca, Montana, Romania the hometown of his parents. He was not a veteran in World War II, however this event effected his life. He lived in Romania until 1948 until his mother put him and his brother Stevie on a train to be taken out of Romania before the borders were closed. He went to live with family in Pennsylvania and was never able to return to Romania. He first worked at A&B a meat packing plant, at Front and Hamilton Streets in Allentown, PA. He went on to work at The Lehigh Valley Dairies on North 7th Street in Allentown, PA until his retirement in 1989. On June 10, 1950 he was united in marriage to Shirley Roth. They would have been married 64 years. They resided in Coplay, PA for most of their married life until moving to Union in 2001. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Whitehall, PA prior to moving to Union and current member of New Beginnings Lutheran Church in Pacific.
