Leanne M.
Baker-Eden
July 30, 1952 – December 22, 2020
Leanne Marie Baker-Eden died peacefully surrounded by her loving family Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at her home in Labadie, Missouri. Leanne was born on July 30, 1952 near San Diego, California to Lloyd and Maria Privetera Baker. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado where Leanne grew up, the oldest of five children. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Boulder High School. She received her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Colorado and soon after became the editor of the Golden Colorado Transcript where she began covering the Colorado School of Mines. This assignment sparked her interest in mining. Leanne went on to attend the Colorado School of Mines and attained her PhD in Mineral Economics.
She departed soon after to Wall Street in New York where she landed an equity analyst position at Phillip Brothers. After six years as a mining analyst, she transitioned to Salomon Brothers and served in the New York office until 1998. She became the Managing Director of the gold desk for Salomon Brothers and relocated the office to San Francisco which she managed for four more years.
Following her transition from Wall Street to Montgomery Street, Leanne started her own company in 2001 and became a valued consultant to the mining industry. Since 2006, she has served on seven mining company boards including Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd, McEwen Mining, ETF Securities, Aurania Resources, Sutter Gold Mining, Reunion Gold Corporation, and Kimber Resources. Leanne also served as President of Sutter Gold Mining from 2011-2013.
Leanne became an icon in the mining industry and built a reputation as a smart, respected analyst when she was on Wall Street. As the analyst for major brokerage firms, she attended numerous mining site tours around the world, annual meetings, and special events. Leanne was well known and many followed her stock analysis and advice. She was an ally for the mining industry and understood the nuances of gold as a commodity and how to weigh the challenges of trying and frothy markets.
Leanne became a familiar face as a spokesperson and moderator at major gold conferences throughout her career. She was a trusted advisor to both mining companies and investor groups. She was well read and stayed current on capital markets, global economies, and currency movements. She was a staunch supporter of liberty and free markets. Her favorite organization was the Mises Institute and she enjoyed attending events with her husband Stan.
Leanne lived a quiet life on the farm raising animals, tending to an extensive garden, canning, and participating in community groups. Healthy living was very important to her, and she made many different types of organic foods, medicines, and oils. Leanne's homegrown olives and pressed olive oil were enjoyed by many friends and family at her organic farm home near Sebastopol. She and Stan were avid land stewards following the lead of organic farmer Joel Salatin, with olive orchards, vast organic gardens, apple orchards, and animals. She enjoyed caring for the gardens and farm and could trap gophers with the best of the them. She and Stan enjoyed time on their farm, but also found time to be active in the community as well. They developed countless friendships and created precious memories with many during their time in Sonoma County.
Leanne wanted to move closer to family, so in 2017, Leanne and Stan relocated to a farm about 50 miles outside St. Louis, Mo. She continued her work with the mining industry but loved the contrast between living on the land and the more corporate side of her life and navigated both with ease.
Leanne spent more than 35 years in the mining industry, specializing in commodity research in the 1980s, equity research in the 90s, and as a valued and respected board member and consultant in the 21 st century. Leanne valued and loved her family, friends, and her beloved Boston Terrier, Georgia. She loved to travel, frequent the arts, concerts, and sporting events. She especially loved basketball and was an avid Golden State Warriors fan. You could find her listening to classic country music, especially Emmy Lou Harris and Willie Nelson.
Leanne was an intelligent, dynamic woman who radiated optimism and a positive attitude. She was compassionate to all and a loving, supportive wife. She is survived by her husband Stan, her step-daughter Amy (Adam), five granddaughters Abigail, Emma, Isabelle, Olivia, and Sophia Uptergrove. Two step-daughters Danielle and Jennifer Bernhisle. Four siblings Rose Anne Baker, Mary Baker-Blades (Frederick), Rick Baker, Theresa Chappelle (David). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins as well as many friends and colleagues across the globe.
