Obituary

Joseph Schmersahl passed away on Monday, November 2, surrounded by the love of his family.

Joe shared 48 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Paulette. The two were truly inseparable, sharing a deep love and partnership that was evident to everyone who knew them. He was a devoted husband, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his family above all else.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Joe was the youngest and last surviving of three brothers, Frank and Bob. Joe and his brothers grew up in St. Louis and built their lives in the surrounding area. He carried with him the values of hard work, dedication, and family throughout his life.

A hardworking and talented home builder, Joe took tremendous pride in his work. His days often started early, a habit he carried with him throughout his life from his years in the building business. He was never one to sit still for long. His talents extended well beyond his profession, as he and Paulette continually worked on remodeling and improving their own home. Joe had an incredible eye for detail and a gift for transforming a space.

Some of Joe’s happiest times were spent with family, especially on trips to Florida and their much-loved stays at Orange Lake in Orlando. He treasured those vacations and the memories made together. He also loved golf and enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie that came with time on the course.

Joe was blessed with wonderful friendships and especially cherished the special bonds he shared with Jim and Jean Urban and Dave and Judy Rousseau. These friendships were an important part of his life and brought him much happiness.

Known for his sense of humor and unmistakable laugh, Joe had a way of bringing joy to those around him. His faith was also important to him, and he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Union, Missouri.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Paulette; his children, Joseph Schmersahl (wife, Jill), Jr., Kimberly Nabholz (husband, Jeff), Jeffrey Schmersahl (wife, Susan), and Joanne Jackson (husband, Bryan); eight grandchildren, Jordan Ritter-Clark, Madison Ritter-Smith, Zach Schmersahl, Nate Jackson, Adam Schmersahl, Samantha Schmersahl, Caleb Schmersahl, and Eliza Schmersahl; and two great-grandchildren, Lucille Clark and Harper Smith.

Joe will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his many talents, his wonderful sense of humor, and his unforgettable laugh. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love he gave so freely to Paulette and his family. The memories of family vacations, time spent with friends, days on the golf course, and the countless things he built and created will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
