Obituary

Joseph D. Mullen, 91, of Union passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Union.

Joe, son of Henry Mullen and wife Florence (Walden) was born October 20, 1930 in Cuba.

Joe served his country in the United States Navy. He was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 296 in Union as well as the Union Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Moolah Shrine in St. Louis. Faithful member of the Ridge Church in Villa Ridge.

He retired from SBC formerly Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a District Manager in St. Louis. He was very instrumental in starting the Missouri One Call System and was the Field Executive Director. He also served as Commissioner on the Union Special Road District for 25 years.

He loved to travel the country and over the years visited all 50 states. He enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing. He took great pride in his home garden. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Florence Mullen; his first wife, Bernice Mullen; his second wife, Rose Marie "Ree" Mullen; two daughters, Gail Schultz and Kathleen Quertermous; four brothers, William D. Mullen, Russ Mullen, Patrick Mullen and Clifford Mullen; two sisters, Mabel Martin and Nancy Mullen and one grandson, James Mullen.

He is survived by his daughter, Vicky Mullen of Twisp, WA; five siblings, Shirley Parker of Raymond, WA, Estell Imes of Winthrop, WA, Caroline Glaese of Cuba, Michael Mullen and wife Ann of Cuba and Phil Mullen and wife Linda of Cuba; two sons-in-law, Robert Quertermous of Spring Bluff and Robert Schultz of Owensville; one daughter-in-law, Lynn Scharfenberg and husband Gary of Union; one step-daughter, Christina Platts and husband Andrew of Chesterfield; two sisters-in-law, Joann and Nancy of Cuba; twelve grandchildren, David Hawkinson and wife Kelly of Mesa, AZ, Dan Hawkinson and wife Jamie of Flagler Beach, FL, Kayla Quertermous and wife Megan of Milwaukee, WI, Emily Butler and husband Eric of Owensville, Ashley Schultz and husband Joe of Gerald, Virgil Davis and wife Jen of New Haven, Dakota Davis and wife Leah of Washington, Kinsey Hillermann and husband Jason of Washington, Aaron Platts of California, Austin Platts of Dallas, TX, Amory Platts of Kansas City, MO and Jordon Platts of California; fourteen great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial donations to Shriners Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are preferred.
