Jimmy C. Prater

Jimmy C. Prater, 78, of Union, passed away in the presence of his family on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Son of Fred and Myrtle (Hartwell) Prater, he was born in Kennett on June 4, 1948. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Shaw, on July 6, 1970, in Fenton.

He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and went on to work for General Motors in the paint repair department for thirty years before his retirement. His abilities were endless as shown in his everyday life, from building toy boxes for his grandchildren to complicated drawings for home improvements.

Jimmy enjoyed watching NASCAR, riding bikes on the Katy Trail, drawing pictures of elephants with his grandchildren and teaching them to sing “Old McDonald Had A Farm”. He cherished the trips to St. Augustine, with Dorothy, his loving wife of over fifty-five years, where they could unwind and enjoy life.

He was a dedicated husband, family man, and a loyal friend. He lived each day with a kind heart and joyful spirit. Whether he was cheering on his grandchildren, enjoying time fishing or gardening, or lending a helping hand, his warmth touched everyone around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; Fred and Myrtle Prater: sisters, Opal Puttin, Dorothy Prater, Joy Venable; brothers, Billy Prater, Harvey Prater, Freddie Prater, Robert Prater, Paul Prater.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Prater of Union; daughter, Rhonda Bailey and husband Jason of Union, son, Jimmy “Dale” Prater and wife Amy of Sullivan; grandchildren, Chase Bailey, Madison Prater, Lincoln Bailey, Wyatt Prater, Porter Bailey, Charlotte Prater; sister, Sue Berry of Imperial; brother, John Prater of Arkansas; sisters-in-law, Pansy Prater of Union, Hazel Prater of Gerald; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
