Obituary

Jerry D. Schmittler, 87, of Union, passed away, Monday, November 28, 2022, at Victorian Manor of Union.

On November 3, 1935, Jerry was born to the union of Willard Schmittler and Geneva (Curtis) in Grayville, Illinois.

He graduated from high school in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Jerry was united in marriage on December 29, 1957, to Carolyn (Willhouse) in Pana, Illinois.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. Reserves from 1955-1963.

Jerry retired from Southwestern Bell after 33 years of dedicated service.

He was a very active member of the St. Clair Southern Baptist Church for over 30 years; serving as a charter member, deacon and trustee.

Jerry was a very talented stained-glass artist. He produced all the work that currently resides inside St. Clair Southern Baptist Church as well as many pieces that he gifted to family and friends. He also enjoyed going camping, photography and gardening. Most of all Jerry loved spending quality time with his family and friends. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Schmittler; his parents, Willard Schmittler and Geneva Akins; one daughter, Kimberly Schmittler; one sister, Patricia Youngman.

Jerry is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey Schmittler and wife Julie of Labadie and Gary Schmittler and significant other Michele Hayes of Pennsylvania; two daughters, Brenda McClusky husband Skip of St. Louis and Gina Schmittler of Union; one brother, Bill Schmittler of Washington state; brother-in-law, Larry Youngman of Illinois; nine grandchildren, Brock Schmittler and wife Kayla, Jeremiah Saal, Michael Saal and fiancé Kayla, Benjamin Schmittler and wife Stephanie, Elijah Schmittler and wife Nina, Joshua Mesey and wife Amy, Jessica Mesey, Meghan Hogan and Austin Schmittler; fourteen great-grandchildren, Brandy, Mary, Kara, Paige, Alex, Zachary, Tyler, Jayden, Jaylen, Molly, Haylee, Ava, Jayna and Addy; other relatives and many friends.
