Gloria Maxine Davis, (nee Stringer) of St. Clair, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017, surrounded by her children and family. Gloria was 80 years old.
Gloria was born to the late James Mack and Irene Minnie (nee Lear) Stringer on June 26, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Before she married, Gloria worked at Prince Gardner and Normandy State Bank.
They were united in marriage on Vallee William Davis' 21st birthday -- on March 8, 1958. This union was blessed with six children. One daughter and five sons.
As a mother, she was a Girl Scout Leader, active in the PTO, and Sunday School Teacher at Bethel Baptist Church. While raising six children, she first managed a local nursery with Vallee. Later she ran their own family business -- "Val Davis and Sons Landscape Service" for many years. After the family moved to St. Clair, Missouri, Gloria worked for Missouri Home Care as a Family Aide. Later, she began employment at East Central College as a mail clerk. However, she soon transferred to the Horticulture Department where she was an Horticulture Assistant in the college greenhouse. She assisted the professor with various tasks caring for the flowers and plants; She especially enjoyed answering questions from the students. Her experience running a nursery and landscape service served her well during this time.
Gloria was a member of Anaconda Baptist Church in Anaconda, Missouri. Her faith and family were guiding forces throughout her life. She was a strong advocate of education and was always encouraging both family and friends to go as far as they could in completing their educations.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, James Mack and Irene Minnie Stringer; her husband, Vallee William Davis; one son, Val William Davis; one brother, Lee Stringer and one sister, Lily Verhaeg.
She is survived by five children. Laura Griffin and husband Michael of Fenton, Mickual Davis and wife Robin of St. Clair, John Davis and wife Cindy of St. Clair, Kenneth Davis of St. Clair and Tim Davis and fiancé Cindy Wiles of St. Clair; four siblings, Nancy Foland and husband Clyde of Hazelwood, Brenda Hancock and husband Randy of Florissant, Mack Stringer and wife Shirley of Hillsboro and Vicki Ragland and fiancé Mark Deming of Lake Worth, FL. Gloria was blessed with 10 grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
