David Kendall Young, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Sunset Care Center in Union at the age of 84. David was born on January 22, 1939, to Everett Young and Charlotte Bass in Cadet, Missouri. He was married to Virginia Martak on September 26, 1964, and together, they shared many wonderful memories.
David served his country with pride as an airman in the United States Airforce for 5 years. After his time in service, he owned and operated Martak Appliance Service and Sales for over 30 years. He was a loyal member of the American Legion post in Washington, The Elks Lodge in Washington, and the Moose Lodge in Union. Additionally, he was a talented woodcarver and leatherworker, hobbies that he enjoyed in his free time. An avid gardener, David enjoyed spending time outdoors and was known for his exceptional grilling skills. He also had a knack for playing the guitar by ear.
One of David's passions was participating in the Missouri Woodcarver's Association, which allowed him to spend quality time with his wife, Virginia. Together they enjoyed traveling and attending woodcarving shows, often visiting Silver Dollar City. He was also a long-time member of the Missouri Woodcarver's Association.
Above all, David cherished his time spent with his family. He was a doting husband to Virginia and a beloved father and grandfather.
David was predeceased by his parents, Everett and Charlotte Young; two brothers, Gary Young and James "Hal" Young; one sister, Celeste Clingin; and a son-in-law, Carl Hellmann. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Young of Washington; his three children, Larry and wife Angie of Kentucky, Charles of Washington, and Shari and husband Larry Klekamp of Washington; two sisters, Rosalyn Smith and husband Laurie of O'Fallon and Deann Deimeke of St. Ann; six grandchildren, Andrew Klekamp and Michelle, Mackenzie Klekamp, Mackayla Hillermann and husband Jake, Nikole Klekamp, Jennifer Belloir and husband Roy, and Chris Young; and four great-grandchildren, Karleigh Klekamp, Hudson Klekamp, Ethan Reed, and Tesa Reed.
In lieu of flowers, David's family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Fisher House Foundation, Inc . The family would appreciate your condolences and support during this difficult time.
