Obituary

Barbara Anne Morgan, 79, of Washington, MO, passed away on Sunday January 29, 2023, after a multi-year struggle with ALS.

Barbara was born on February 12, 1943, to Barbara (Titus) and Joseph Holzmann in Newport, Rhode Island. The family moved to St. Louis, MO when she was a young girl. Barb's younger sisters Betty and Nancy were born in St. Louis, and she loved spending time with them. She spent her younger years enjoying school and her friends in Affton, MO. She graduated from Nerinx Hall Catholic High School. Barbara was a great lover of art, music and theatre and enjoyed the Muny Opera, Art Museum and the Repertory Theatre.

Barbara married Eugene Stein and they became the parents of two children, Jeffrey and Gwendolyn Stein. An English teacher and educator, she also delighted in books and taught her children the value of language and the worlds that books open for one's mind to explore. The family moved out of St. Louis to a farm in Lonedell, MO and Barb was a teacher at the local Lonedell School for several years. She loved teaching all children and was very patient and kind to her students. Barbara later moved to Washington, MO where she felt a strong connection to the town and its people. Barb achieved her Master's in Education from Webster University while working full-time instructing young minds at St. John Gildehaus School. A patient, fair and kind person, she was loved by her students and fellow teachers.

Barbara was a member of the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Parish and had a strong and perpetual faith in God. She was also very active in later years at the YMCA and the Washington Senior Center. She delighted in attending yoga and water aerobics, volunteering at the Senior Center front desk, painting in the art class and talking with new and old friends. She became an accomplished painter in her own right. As a result, her work now adorns the walls of family and friends, leaving a fitting reminder of the joy it brought her. She was also a lover of the piano and a lifelong student, always pushing herself to improve and loved playing her piano at home for friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Douglas; her parents Barbara and Joe Holzmann, as well as her beloved Aunt Anne and Uncle Ed Hoyle of Rhode Island. She leaves behind a group of relatives and friends that love her dearly and celebrate the life she led and the impact she had on us all. Surviving family members include her son, Jeffrey Stein; her daughter Gwendolyn Stein and life partner Michael Crane, sister Betty and husband Sam Rutherford and her faithful and ever-present furry companion, Lola.

Barbara was cared for by family at home in her final months. She always remained strong, loving and with a positive outlook despite the challenges of her illness. Her life is well exemplified by the quote, "Life isn't about finding shelter in the storm, it's about learning to dance in the rain."

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the continued research and treatment of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) by donating to the national ALS Association, which can be done online at www.als.org.
